Raleigh Plantation Token (ca. 1584) Brass. Bets-15. Die Pair 1. Very Good. 11.6 grams. 29.5 mm. 2.28 mm thick. Plain Edge. Token reads "As soone as weee to bee begunn we did begin to bee undonn". Thought to be issued by Sir Walter Raleigh suggesting fate of Roanoke colony in 1584. An extremely rare early issue, associated with the first attempts to establish a colony on the North Carolina coast well before Jamestown. The fields are light tan mixing with olive. Struck in low relief as are all known genuine examples and clearly identifiable as such. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
