Herod Agrippa II As King. Struck under Nero, ca. 69 CE. AE half-denomination (18 mm; 6.05 g). Mint of Caesarea Paneas. NEPΩN KAIΣAP ΣBAΣTOY (of Nero Caesar Augustus); laureate bust of Nero to r. Reverse: EΠI BACIΛE AΓPINN NEPΩ NIE (in the time of King Agrippa, Neronias); within a circle and wreath. Hendin 1274; T-130. Reddish-brown patina with some dark green highlights. Scarce. Very Fine. Estimated Value $200 - UP
According to Hendin, this coin as well as Hendin 1276, was issued to commemorate Agrippa's refounding of Caesarea Paneas as Neronias. It was once believed that the IE in the reverse legend referred to a date but this is not the case, instead it is the abbreviation for the name of the mint city Neronias.
Ex Stephan Fregger Collection.
