Rare Burgess Shale Marella Fossil. Marella splendens is the signature soft bodied arthropod that was discovered by Charles Walcott in 1909. The 515 million year old soft bodied fossils of the Burgess Shale of British Columbia, Canada are world famous for proving the Cambrian explosion of body types of sea animals that were unknown to exist prior to this amazing discovery. Marella splendens was a strange looking filter feeder that has not been classified as to what it was even today over 100 years later. This 12mm long nearly complete soft bodied animal on a 2 ¾ X 2 inch black shale matrix that has the imprint of the strange animal visible but it is the same color as the matrix. There is a darker black smudge on part of the body which is fossilized stomach contents. From an old time collection. Estimated Value $300 - UP
