Lot 430

Rare, Gaza or Ashkelon Jar, 5th-6th Century A.D. Byzantine Period, Pot for the Storage and Shipping of Wine, Present Day Israel. Amazing artifact of the Levant or Eastern Mediterranian region which includes Cyprus, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and the Northern Sinai. A fully restored Ashkelon Jar. Frequently these pieces are called Gaza Jars, due to their association with "Gaza wine", pretty much a loose term applied to wines from a number of regions but which were shipped from the ports around Gaza.
These pots were made for hundreds of years, beginning as early as 3rd Century AD. Based on photos we are estimating this piece from the Byzantine Period, 5-6th Century A.D. but we encourage everyone to engage in their own due diligence.

Jar is about 20 x 8 x 8" from the terminus to the lip. Professionally restored, the inside is lined with the heavy reinforcement coating used in the restoration process. With the stand, pot measures 21.5"

Note: The stand is affixed to the stand and by all evidence by the restorer. There is no wiggle to the jar, it is firmly seated into the custom antiqued brass stand.

This piece will be packed and shipped in-house, double boxed. Continental US only unless otherwise approved in advance. (250-$350) If an overseas purchaser, client must make all arrangements for pick-up and shipping but we can pack it safely. Estimated Value $1,500 - 3,000

Realized $900
