35 Letters/Signatures of 19th Century Notables/Politicians; Robert Lincoln, Richard Mentor Johnson, Hamilton Fish, Oliver Wolcott, Daniel Webster. Trove of 35 letters all from the 19th Century of politicians, notables and letters of interest. A diverse collection but many letters by influential men and women of the time. Highlights include:
1.) Thomas Hendricks, VP to Grover Cleveland, letter signed letter as Commissioner of General Land Office under Franklin Pierce, 1858. 2.) Hamilton Fish signed document as Governor of NY, in his first year, 1849, 20 years prior to serving as Secretary of State from 1869-1877. 3.) Free frank ca. 1799-1800 addressed by Olivier Wolcott Jr. as Secretary Treasurer after Hamilton, to his father, Oliver Wolcott in Conn. 4.) Horace Mann, Congressman who proved a significant advocate for public education, an ALS to the Secretary of Havlock Scholorships dated 1850 and in stunning condition. 5.) Letter signed by Daniel Webster dated May 14, 1841 while serving as Secretary of State under William Henry Harrison regretfully declining an event for Senator Nathaniel P. Talmadge of New York in the most eloquent of terms. 6.) Richard Mentor Johnson, Vice President under Martin Van Buren and the first Vice President to assume office under the provisions of the 12th Amendment. ALS dated 1849 regarding the sale of a draft leaving $250 to his credit. Johnson is credibly credited after much research of witnesses at the time and by historians as the one who killed Indian Chief, Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames in Upper Canada during the War of 1812. 7.) Caesar A. Rodney, 6th Attorney General under Jefferson and Madison and nephew to Caesar Rodney who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. 8.) Clipped signature of Theodore M. Pomeroy, who holds the record of being Speaker of the House for one day March 3-4 1869 under Andrew Johnson. 9.) Printed Message from President Andrew Jackson on the death of James Madison, June 30, 1836. 10.) Large clipped signature by Albert Gallatin, Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson and Madison. 10.) Long ALS by Congressman James Garland dated May 2, 1840, Charlottesville his last year in office where he writes he can no longer support President Van Buren's Administrion. 11.) Letter from Robert Fulton Sudlow, grandson of inventor Robert Fulton, on the donation of the marble statue of his grandfather on behalf of the State of Pennsylvania to Statuary Hall in the Capitol Building which ultimately did happen. 12.) Robert Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War, letter signed to Attorney General B. H. Brewster on War Department stationery dated May 16th 1863.

Tucker 3rd Treaurer of the US, Governor Thomas Mann Randolph, Governor of Virginia, document signed, TLS by Benjamin Harris Brewster on Department of Justice letterhead dated 1883 scarce ALS by decorated Brigadier General Ward Burnett officer in the Mexican American War, a very unusual and timely letter of a physician worried about taking untested quinine for headache, and other letters of interest by news editors, writers, mining tycoons and artists.
