McDonald, James Wilson Alexander, George Washington Bronze Bust Dated 1898, Henry-Bonnard Bronze Co (1824-1908) Handsome bronze bust of George Washington by James Wilson McDonald for the Henry-Bonnard Bronze Co. New York City, Copyrighted in 1898. McDonald modeled his bust on French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon's (1741-1828) towering full profile marble sculpture from the late 18th century that stands at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond. Based on a life mask and other measurements of George Washington taken by Houdon, it is considered one of the most accurate depictions of the subject.

Note: There are two iterations of this bronze. This is the taller, turn-of-the-century piece that stands 19 x 11½ x 7". In high relief and on verso is sculptor McDonald's oath and certification that the work is based on the life mask taken of Washington and Houdon.

Sculpture boasts a beautiful aged patina, superior bronze casting and is in near to mint condition. Total weight is 32 pounds.
Will be shipped and packed in house. Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000
