Positively Identified Powder Horn from the 11th Virginia Regiment, Formed in 1777, Also Known as Morgan's Rifles. The 11th Virginia Regimanent was organized Feburary of 1777 drawing men from Loudoun, Frederick, Prince William, and Amelia Counties. Field officer's at Valley Forge were Colonel Daniel Morgan, Lt. Colonel John Cropper, Major Thomas Snead, and Major Thomas Massie. Colonel Daniel Morgan was in command from November 12, 1776 to September 14, 1778 hence the nickname "Morgan's Rifles". They entered Valley Forge with 326 men assigned, but only 81 fit for duty. When they left, Valley Forge with 254 assigned and 152 fit for duty.

The regiment saw action at the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth. The unit was reassigned to the 2nd Virginia Brigade on 22 July 1778, and it was reorganized to nine companies and redesignated as the 7th Virginia Regiment. The unit was captured on 12 May 1780 at the Siege of Charleston and subsequently disbanded on 1 January 1781.

The paperwork conveying with the horn is a one page invoice from Alexander Historical Auctions with "1777 11th Virginia Powder Horn, 7/11/2015", a four page print-out of research on the descendants of James Anderson as well as a copies of the regiment's muster roll from the Valley Forge Legacy, Muster Roll Project. The paperwork is a provenance of the the collection and significance of James Anderson 1500 piece collection from which this horn is from.

Horn has over the years developed a deep brown and rich patina. Carved into the end cap are the initials JAA. Just below are two or three letters but too difficult to determine. Horn measures 9" in length 2½ x 2½" at end cap. Excellent condition. Estimated Value $2,500 - 4,000
