Lot 645

1858. Small letters. NGC graded MS-64+. Nicely toned on both sides. A handsome Flying Eagle cent with great luster and a solid strike, particularly across the tail feathers and wings. The surfaces show precious few signs of contact and are virtually of gem quality. The Small Letters variety has AM of AMERICA clearly separated, while the Large Letters variety has these two letters touching at their base serifs. It seems unusual that the mint would change this elegant design so soon after it was launched, these Flying Eagle cents were popular since the day they were released into circulation, yet after barely two years and a few months, the Indian cents were launched in 1859. Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200

Realized $1,500
