Lot 541

1795 C-5b R4 Without Pole, Thick Planchet VG10. Glossy light olive and brown. The surfaces are smooth and the toning is attractive, but this piece most likely was lightly cleaned long ago and has retoned. A tiny planchet chip at the bottom of the second 0 in the denominator is the only notable mark (as struck). Essentially just moderately worn. Later die state; the bisecting die crack on the reverse is bold creating a clearly defined shelf with the field above the crack obviously lower than the field below. Struck with the obverse misaligned slightly to K-6 while the reverse is nicely centered on the planchet. The date is weak, as usual on the thick planchet version, but it is still readable. Weight 118.9 grains versus the normal 84.0-grain standard for the normal thin planchet version. Estimated Value $500 - UP
Ex Richard Gross 4/2001.
