Lot 523

1794 S-55 R2 PCGS graded VF30. Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are slightly dull and the planchet is covered with uniform extremely fine granularity, the roughness so fine it is barely visible under strong magnification. No verdigris and essentially mark-free. The strike is a bit uneven, particularly on the reverse (a fact noted by Breen in his description of the variety where he says "Usually unevenly struck."). The date is clear and the legends are complete except for weakness on the left side of the reverse. MDS, Breen state II, with fine die cracks on the obverse. Our grade is F15. The attribution and Lou Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 8 finer. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
