Lot 520

1794 S-50 R5 PCGS Good Details Scratch. Attractive medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, void of any trace of roughness or verdigris. There are a few light contact marks including a fine scratch in the field close to the portrait, a small rim bruise over the top of the cap, and a few fine scratches inside the wreath. Basically just a well-worn cent with minor marks consistent with the grade. LDS, Breen state III, with a fine die crack from the 4 to the bust and pole (shows as a dull wave due to the wear). The date and LIBERTY are easily readable but some of the legend outside the wreath is weak or missing. (The reverse on this variety is always weaker than the obverse because the reverse die has little or no protective rim. Same for the next two varieties, S-51 and S-52, as all three share this same reverse die.) Our grade is G5. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
Ex Thomas D. Reynolds 7/27/2002-Scott Barrett (via Tom Reynolds) 5/2012-Dan Trollan Collection, Goldbergs 1/27/2019:167-Lou Alfonso Collection (includes the Reynolds, Barrett, and Trollan envelopes and the Goldberg lot ticket).
