Lot 509

1794 S-32 R2 PCGS graded AU53. Frosty dark olive brown and steel. Mostly smooth showing only a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices, but the toning is dark and the surfaces are a bit dull. This cent looks like it has never been brushed or given any "TLC." There are traces of fine verdigris on both sides including a spot between the I & T in UNITED, another patch right of the second S in STATES, and specks right of the F in OF. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack through the first S in STATES into the wreath and bold overlapping die clashmarks on the reverse. The strike is uneven which is often seen on this variety due to axially misaligned dies (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). In addition the reverse is rotated 75 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. As a result the right edge of the obverse and opposing lower right edge of the reverse are weakly struck while everything else is strong. Our grade is net VF35. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 6 finer. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP
Ex Stanley Fisher-Stack's Bowers 4/2014:5029 (not sold)-Chris McCawley 5/2/2015-Lou Alfonso Collection.
