Lot 504

1794 S-25 R3 PCGS graded XF40, CAC Approved. Glossy olive brown and steel. Smooth and nearly flawless except for an uneven strike. The strike on the left sides is strong while it is considerably weaker on the right, the result of dies that were out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). The weakly struck area shows many of the usual tiny planchet chips that usually strike out, and the tops of MERI are weak. MDS, Breen state III, with a doubled set of die clashmarks showing on both sides but no die cracks. An attractive cent, just imperfectly struck. Graded VF25 in the Del Bland census. Noyes says VF25 net VF20 for the uneven strike and tied for CC#10, his photo #61957. Our grade is VF20+, close to VF25. The attribution and Alfonso Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer: 1 in 45, 1 in 50, 1 in 53, 1 in 58. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
Ex Robert L. Moore (via Dorothy Paschal)-Eugene Exman-Exman Estate, Heritage Auctions 6/4/2015:3041-Chris McCawley 5/5/2018-Lou Alfonso Collection.
