Lot 492

1793 S-12 R6- Liberty Cap PCGS graded G6. Rather glossy dark steel brown and olive with slightly lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. The surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals microscopic roughness hidden under the glossy toning in the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and the only notable marks are a tiny vertical scratch at the right bottom of the 7 and a small planchet chip in the leaves under TA in STATES. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for the usual weakness on ONE CENT due to the obvious swelling in the center of the reverse (which formed quickly and forced the very early retirement of the reverse die). MDS, Breen state II. The swelling on the reverse is strong but a couple letters of ONE CENT are still visible, albeit quite weak. Graded VG8 sharpness net G6 and tied for CC#10 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #26606. Our grade is G6+, close to VG7. An important cent that comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Dr. Cadden Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35486. Estimated Value $12,500 - UP
