Lot 38

1843 N-4 R1 Petite Head, Large Ltrs PCGS graded MS65 Brown. Frosty light greenish olive with very faded red in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the only marks are some spots of darker toning (not carbon) on the obverse, particularly at stars 1-3 and under star 10. LDS, die state d (Newcomb's old #13). The die lines and points of the earlier state are gone and there is a narrow rim cud under the 1 in the date. The luster is a bit subdued by a thin layer of natural oxidation, and a proper brushing could bring out more of the underlying mint luster. Our grade is MS62 (perhaps better after a light brushing). The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 6; 3 finer: 2 in 65+, 1 in 66. Estimated Value $1,200 - UP
Acquired from an unrecorded source at the Long Beach Expo 9/11/2009-Colonel Steven K. Ellsworth Collection.

Realized $2,640
