Lot 26

1842 N-1 R3 Small Date PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty mint red mellowing to steel brown and light olive with at least a third of the original mint red remaining visible. Just a few minor marks including traces of an old fingerprint at stars 7-10 and a spot of slightly darker toning left of the top of star 11. M-LDS, die state b. The small lump under the 4 is gone and the lump below the 1 is very dull. The earlier die line under ITED is gone. A beautiful example of this relatively tough die variety. Our grade is MS63, CC#1 of the business strikes in the Grellman census and clearly the "reddest" business strike seen. A highlight of a great collection, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
