Lot 910

1872-CC. NGC graded MS-63. Nicely toned on the obverse with delicate hues of silver-gray to the centers and framed with deeper medium gray to the rim. The reverse is well matched and attractive too, with flashes of mirroring in the fields yet free of any detracting marks. Needless to say, this is an incredible rarity in any grade, even in well circulated grades! Only 3,150 pieces were struck for the entire year, and finding any decent coin to represent this key issue has always been a major challenge for collectors. Back in the heady days of the 1870s around the Carson City Mint, it was definitely the wild west there, with hard work, hard living and not much care for the moment. Hence coins like this were banged about, spent and circulated hard, ridden on horses into the distant valleys. Only a few survived in high grades like the present piece. Here is one that has earned the incredible Choice Mint State status from NGC. Notice the full mint frost on the devices and incredible traces of reflectivity in the fields. Although a good many of the original tiny mintage do survive, only a few retain mint state status. Reflective fields on both sides. Pop 2; 4 finer, 2 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. Estimated Value $50,000 - UP
