Lot 902

1859-S. PCGS graded MS-62. Nice even gold and russet toning on both sides. Frosty, particularly on the reverse of this low mintage issue. A scarce coin and seldom seen this choice. Only 20,000 struck, and precious few are known in mint state today, this one certainly near the top of those known. This is the first and only issue of silver dollars by the San Francisco Mint of the No Motto style. In fact, the Seated design was scarcely struck at all in San Francisco, with just a handful coined in 1870, a few thousand more in 1872. Although a modest number of silver dollars were struck there in 1873, these were apparently melted as none are known today. Hence finding a Liberty Seated Dollar from San Francisco really comes down to those dated 1859 and 1872, both challenging issues--behind the virtually unobtainable 1870-S. An historic and always popular issue with collectors as such. Pop 9; 9 finer, 7 in 63, 1 in 63+, 1 in 64+. (PCGS # 6948) Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500
