Lot 898

1844. NGC graded MS-63. This is a key date with a tiny mintage of just 20,000 pieces. All known coins struck for circulation used a single obverse die which is actually a doubled die error--so the vertical shield lines are four in number instead of the expected three lines. Furthermore, there is a misplaced top of the 8 from the date in the skirt lines right of the shield point and above the 84. The strike is sharp for this prized issue, with strong definition on the star radial lines as well as the skirt lines. Matching with sharpness on the reverse, where the eagle's feathers are crisp and clear. Close examination finds scattered light handling marks present as expected for the grade, but the eye appeal is strong for this issue and grade. The reverse has another feature worthy of note, fine die lines are present in the field just below and above the eagle's wings, and these are seen on all surviving examples of this elusive issue. Likely one of the top half dozen or so of the business strikes that are known today, making this a fine offering for the connoisseur. Well struck and nicely toned with a pleasing, even gray patina from long and careful storage. Pop 2; 1 finer in 64. Estimated Value $7,500 - UP
