Lot 895

1799/8. 15 Stars on Reverse. B-3, BB-141, Rarity 3. PCGS graded EF-40. Lightly toned on both sides with tawny gold shades which deepen at the periphery. This is a delightful variety as it offers two really fun features, first is the the overdate with the final 9 in the date over a previous 8, the second features is on the reverse where 15 stars were initially placed over the eagle, but the top row of stars shows where two of these stars were covered over with extended clouds, but a few points from the stars still peak out. Thus the engraver blundered by punching in too many stars, and covered over two of them for the most part with enlarged clouds! Precious few examples of this kind of die blunder and partial recovery are known. Pop 3; 19 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 40064) Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300

Realized $4,200
