Lot 663

1844. NGC graded MS-64. Mostly untoned save for lovely antique pale gold around the rims and central devices. Liberty herself is quite frosty and bright silver, matched by the wreath on the reverse. This is a key date issue, known as the "Little Orphan Annie" dime since the 1940s when a writer hoarded a few of these and then named this issue for the comic strip Little Orphan Annie that was in its heyday. These 1844 dimes have long been known to be scarce or rare, so the name has stuck over the years, and collectors high and low search for one of these. Rarely are any found even approaching mint state, and this near gem is certainly one of the very finest known. A delight for the specialist who appreciates both rarity and quality, as key dates like this always bring commanding premiums when offered. Low mintage date of 72,500 pieces struck. Pop 3; only 1 example graded higher in 65 at NGC. Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000
