Sale 122

Lot 658

1823, 3 over 2. Small E's. JR-1, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-65. Rainbow toning around the edges of both sides with lovely teal and blue through the stars, russet along the star centers. Liberty herself is bright silver and frosty. Matching on the reverse, with splendid clean surfaces and solid eye appeal. This coin may well be tied with one other as the finest seen by NGC and is no doubt high in the Condition Census for the variety and date. It is interesting to note that several obverse dies were engraved and dated 1822, but only one obverse die was used to coin the meager output that year, so when 1823 and 1824 rolled around, the leftover new 1822 obverse dies were overdated with a 3 for this issue, and a 4 for the 1824/2 issue. An historical and elegant coin all in one package. Semi reflective fields. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. Estimated Value $10,000 - UP
