Lot 654

1804. 13 Stars on Reverse. JR-1, Rarity 5. NGC graded AU-53. Even light blue and gold toning on both sides which shows a bit lighter on the devices so they are accented and well framed against the deeper fiields. This is a really rare date for early dime collectors to obtain. There are two distinct die varieties of 1804 dimes, this one has 13 reverse stars over the eagle, the other has 14 stars over the eagle. Both are rare with about 35-40 pieces known in all grades. Thus a total of about 75 1804 dimes are known. Needless to say this incredible AU53 coin is one of the finest to survive and will be a highlight in any advanced collection The finest graded at PCGS of the 13 star reverse is also AU55, so this coin is right near the top of those known. Of course the 1804 date is magical in coins, with the immense popularity of the 1804 silver dollar rarity, but this dime certainly holds its own as the rarest early dime date by a good margin. An important condition rarity that is destined for a fantastic collection. Only 8,265 struck. Pop 1; only 1 example graded finer in 55 at NGC. Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000
