Lot 625

1937-D. 3 legs. PCGS graded MS-65. PQ. Nicely toned on both sides with a dash of golden yellow mixed with bright luster and a touch of pale nickel blue. This is one of the most popular key issues from the Buffalo nickel series, with the obviously missing foreleg on the bison. While plentiful enough in lower circulated grades for most collectors to afford one, in mint state the rarity increases with each grade point. In gem as we have here, this is a classic condition rarity with strong demand at all times.

As we have learned, the reverse die developed clash marks from the obverse, when a young mint employee was told to file these clash lines off, he went a bit too hard and removed the foreleg of the bison as well. Naturally this type of blunder delights collectors and the curious 3 legged-buffalo was born. Highly collectible and always a key issue with limited numbers found in mint state. Pop 48; 31 finer, 14 in 65+, 12 in 66, 5 in 66+. (PCGS # 3982) Estimated Value $19,000 - 20,000
