Lot 600

1867. Rays. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Key date. Fully brilliant white nickel surfaces and untoned. The strike is needle sharp and bold, with no softness, furthermore the surfaces are excelllent and keep this coin solidly in the gem category. Add to this the fact that something in the range of 60 proofs survive, of which perhaps only 25 pieces exhibit the Cameo contrast as seen here. The Rays reverse only lasted a few months into 1867, as the Mint found that on 1866 and early 1867 coinage the dies broke and cracked very early in thelr striking production, leaving the Mint scrambling to make new dies constantly because the design was just a bit too busy for this hard nickel-copper alloy. In time simplified designs without rays, stretched die life out long enough to make sense. Pop 7; 4 finer, 2 in 66 Cameo, 2 in 66 Star Cameo. Estimated Value $25,000 - UP
*This coin contains the COIN WORLD PLUS sticker.
