Lot 2

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Threepence Noe-34 NGC graded MS63. Variety with Pellets beside the Tree. A beautiful example of this tough denomination, one of the sharpest seen. Frosty medium steel gray with lighter silvery gray on the highpoints and slightly darker bluish steel gray in protected areas. The obverse (tree side) is misaligned to the top, as usual on this variety, while the reverse is nicely centered on the planchet. The date and legends are quite bold except for the usual weakness at EN in ENGLAND due to earlier die clashing. No marks or planchet defects, essentially flawless. Superior to either of the examples in the Ford collection. A premium example of the type and variety, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Eliasberg provenance are noted on the NGC label. Weight 17.9 grains shown on the label as well. NGC population 2; tied for finest graded at both services. Estimated Value $15,000 - UP
Ex Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, Bowers & Merena 5/20/1996:4.
