Lot 1216

1839-C. NGC graded AU-58. This is a key date to the Classic Head gold series and one of the most sought after for the unusual obverse C Mintmark above the date for its branch mint of Charlotte, North Carolina. There was a regional gold mine in that area and hence a branch mint opened there in 1839. This one is an early striking from the dies which are often seen on later strikes with several heavy die cracks. Here the devices are all sharp and attractive, and the surfaces are free of all but minute marks. Always in demand for the first year of issue from this mint, and a rarity in all grades. Well struck and untoned. Only 18,140 struck. Pop 62; 18 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7699) Estimated Value $10,000 - UP
