Stowe, Harriet Beecher; Scarce ALS Dated 1887/9 Sent to Author, J.B. Pond Thanking for Book of Speeches by Her Brother, Henry Ward Beecher (1811-1896) Important, influential abolitionist and prolific author best known for her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" published in 1852. The work which powerfully depicted the inhumane treatment of slaves had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the U.S. creating a division which no doubt seeded the call for Civil War. The book reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and Great Britain, galvanizing anti-slavery forces and widespread anger in the South.

Stowe's brother was Henry Ward Beecher, an influential Congregationalist, social reformer, abolitionist and immensely popular public speaker. J.B. Pond represented Stowe and most all of the great orators of the time including Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglas. In 1887, Pond published a collection of Henry Ward Beecher's, sermon's, lectures and speeches from a month's long tour through Great Britain that is still published today.

In this short note, 6 x 5½", dated August 24, 1887/9 by Beecher Stowe, is addressed to "Mr. Pond" thanking him for his "valuable book, just received. I anticipate much pleasure from the reading of it. Your's ever truly, H. B. Stowe".
