Roosevelt, Franklin Delano: Collection of 25 Pieces Including Letters as President & Governor, 5 Signed Pieces by Eleanor and Roosevelt Children (1882-1945) 32nd President of the United States, winning four presidential elections and considered one of the top leaders of the 20th Century with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt achieving almost equal acclaim for her works. This is a fine collection of letters, photos and ephemera involving FDR and his immediate family and personal life.
1.) Franklin D. Roosevelt; TLS on White House stationery, 9 x 7" folded, dated July 20, 1939 regarding a request by Eleanor Roosevelt to the President to alert the Ambassador to the UK, Joseph Kennedy, regarding her stay in the UK. Boldly signed, the signature comes with an LOA by James Spence with cert sticker affixed on verso. Very fine condition with even toning throughout and with some light water staining as well that do not impact Roosevelt's signature. Second TLS as Governor of New York dated Nov. 28, 1930, 8½ x 8" on State of New York letterhead is in only fair condition with heavy fold lines, a hand written correction of the address and staining but the signature remains very fine indeed. Ephemera included directly linked to FDR are formal invitations to the White House and Hyde Park. There is also a vintage color portrait study printed on card stock (especially the position of the hands) by Chandor dated March 1945 for his painting, Big Three at Yalta.
2.) The five pieces signed by Eleanor Roosevelt are all at different points in her life. A TLS on White House stationery, 9¼ x 6" dated Aug 3. 1937 about an appointment where she signs with an extensive autograph postscript. The other three typed letters signed, two are on United Nations Hospitality Committee, Department of Commerce and Public Events both to the Ambassador of Guatemala April and May, 1956 and a personal thank you on her personal stationery at her 211 East 62nd Street address, 7 x 6". The 5th signed pieces is a signed 3 x 5" are all in excellent condition.
3.) Signed letter/photos by Roosevelt children: Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. signing as Lieut. USNR a thank you for kind messages during his hospital stay, March 18, 1942, a signed photo (mounted on paper) and signed 3 x 5" card. James Roosevelt signed vintage original 8 x 10" photo and one later photo and a TLS dated August 23, 1945. Also two signatures by Anna Roosevelt, one TLS as Anna Roosevelt Boettiger and on 3x 5" card as Anna Roosevelt Habsted. Finally autographs on 3 x 5" cards by Sara D. Roosevelt and John A. Roosevelt.
4.) Signed stock certificate by F.M Delano for the Mexican Telephone Company dated 1882, Uncle of Franklin Roosevelt.
5.) Interesting ephemera including Rare Western Union Telegram for the Internment Service for Eleanor Roosevelt which doubled as the invitaiton. auction folio from H.R. Harmer Philatelic Auctioneers as well as the purchased, stamped cover from the Collection of Franklin Roosevelt held over four days in 1946. Assorted White House invitations and admission cards during the Roosevelt Administration and a few letters signed by people in his administration.
6.) Vintage double-weight and mounted, 5½ x 7½ beautiful B&W photo of President Roosevelt giving Legion of Merit to General Dwight Eisenhower. The Legion of Merit is only one of two military neck orders and was established by Roosevelt by executive order in October of 1942. Upon closer inspection, the General Eisenhower has signed across his body with black fountain pen ink. It is barely visible unless at close distance, tilted toward light. As Roosevelt established this order, this signed photo is included here. Estimated Value $1,200 - UP
