Lot 18

Two 19th Century military appointments by the 16th and 17th Presidents of the United States. 1. Abraham Lincoln (1808-1865). Partially printed document signed as President on vellum 19½ x 15½. Appointing Peter H. Niles to First Lieutenant in the Signal Corp, with the appointment signed and dated July 15, 1864. Appointment is hand signed by President Lincoln and Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War. Note: This appointment boasts one of the cleanest, near pristine full signatures of the President we have seen in some time, in spite of an ages old soft fold to the document running through it. A wonderful acquisition for any level of collector or institution. In excellent condition.

The Andrew Johnson appointment would normally not be running with the Abraham Lincoln. However to split these two would be a shame in that the Johnson appointment dated April 20, 1866 is for the same individual, Peter H. Niles now being appointed to Captain by Brevet. However the signature by Andrew Johnson is a steel engraving, but Edwin Stanton's is authentic.

The two appointments are matted and framed modestly to 28 x 42" under plexi-glass and can be removed and shipped without if preferred.

There are a great number of sites that are available regarding information on Captain Peter H. Niles including some cataloging his reports. He mustered out in 1869. Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000

Realized $5,520
