A Fanciful Wooden Screen/Shaving Stand. China, c. later 19th century. Made for the export market, this robust and stalwart piece of furniture is fashioned like a scholar's screen. Darkly toned, the rosewood-like tropical wood is figured with dense, artistic grain. The stand with skirted base, outward curved legs, and openwork panels enriched with arabesques of dragons. The screen a porcelain tile with applied and fired paint showing two mythical children(?). One holds a large lotus blossom like a parasol, the other lifts the lid on a covered dish containing a toad, or fish, from which a cloudy plume arises. The screen flips over to reveal a mirror, encased in an artful and elaborately carved frame. Some cracking and old repairs to the frame on the mirror side, otherwise piece solid and attractive. Height: 19-1/4". Width: 12".
Estimated Value $300-UP.
