Pair of Art Nouveau Cloisonne Vases. Late 19th or early 20th century. Outstanding and unusual pair of brass vases with intricate design in cloissone with varying shades of blue enamel. Unsigned. Minor abrasions to the bases, minor finish wear to brass at tops and enamel on sides, a handful of tiny nicks on each vase, one vase has a shallow but long (1¼") dent in its side. Both pieces would benefit from a gentle professional cleaning. Overall, very good condition.

We have never seen cloisonne of such intricate design: hundreds of tiny swirls decorate each vase and are set off by an acanthus border at the neck and leaf flourishes on the body. The quality of the cloisonne work bespeaks Japanese manufacture and the decoration points firmly at the European market. This is a fabulous combination of color and design, recalling alternately the decorative arts of the Empire and the Art Nouveau periods. A true find.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.
