[Napoleon I] Josephine and Marie Louise - Napoleon's Two Empresses Plus a Mistress. Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814). Manuscript letter signed "Joséphine" as Empress of the French, one page, 9x8", Bayonne, June 14, 1808. To the Grand Master of the Imperial University, recommending M. Guillot, who had taught her son [Eugène]. Fine condition. Napoleon had crowned Joséphine Empress on Dec. 2, 1804, after crowning himself Emperor. They divorced on Jan. 10, 1810 because Napoleon needed an heir. Marie Louise of Austria (1791-1847). Second wife and queen consort of Napoleon I. They married on Mar. 11, 1810 and she bore a son on Mar. 20, 1811. Manuscript letter signed "Marie-Louise" as Empress, one page, 12 x 9½", May 5, 1810, regarding the Société de la Charité Maternelle. Fine. After Napoleon's 1814 abdication, the Congress recognized Marie-Louise as Duchess of Parma. Her son, called the King of Rome, was not allowed to live in Italy but was sent to live at the Austrian court. Also included is an untranslated ALS by Mlle. George, née Marguerite Weimer, a French stage actress with whom Napoleon had a brief affair. Estimated Value $600 - UP
