Two (2) Beautiful Lacquer Decoupage Boxes from the Russian Collection in Palekh Both Glorious Scenes of Winter. Palekh lacquer boxes are Russian folk handicraft of a miniature painting, which is done with tempera paints on varnished articles made of papier-mâché ranging in sizes suitable for many uses. They are painted with local bright paints over the black background and are known for their delicate and smooth design, abundance of golden shading, and accurate silhouettes of flattened figures, which often cover the surface of the lids and sides of the articles completely. Palekh is the most renowned of four such famous villages who are known for creating traditional craft boxes.
Two decoupage boxes celebrating the glorious Winter season. 1.) The larger box likely a fairy tale set in a magical city, the colorful, complex art highlighted by fine details of gilt gold throughout with gilt gold borders to top and sides. 1½ x 6 x 5" 2.) The second a wonderful winter scene of horse drawn sleighs passing each other with details of gilt gold 1½ x 4 x 3".
