Kosa, Emil. "Stairway In Spoleto". (1903-1968) Acclaimed French born artist who studied while abroad but came to California spending 35+ years working for 20th Century Fox as a special effects artist (back drops, title art, scenic plates) and actually won an Oscar for his work on CLEOPATRA in 1963. But through his whole life he painted in various styles both in oil and watercolor. He exhibited as early as 1940 at LACMA as well as numerous other museums. Offered is a stunning oil entitled "Stairway In Spoleto". Based on other works set in Italy, clearly Kosa traveled abroad later in life for subject. This is a beautiful oil on canvas, boasting an almost cinematic perspective (Luchino Visconti comes to mind) with the subtle subject of a man elegantly dressed at the top of the stairs. A large work, canvas measures 23½ x 31½" and custom framed to 29 x 37" in beautiful gilt wood. Frame and painting in excellent condition. Kosa has signed in lower left corner but he also signed on verso on one of the wood stretch bars. There is also a tag affixed to the paper that showed that the painting in 1965 was sent to a gallery for a one-man exhibition, returned and sent to Fullerton Art Museum. Estimated Value $2,200 - UP
