James Fellowes. Portrait of a Gentleman Wearing a Green Waist Coat and Vest (1737). (1690-1760) Early 18th Century English portrait artist known for his formal works which boast exceptional details of the look and wardrobe of the time. "Portrait of a Gentleman Wearing a Green Waist Coat and Vest" is signed and dated 1737, making this work one of the oldest paintings Goldberg Auctions has offered. We note the buttons are covered in fabric, a custom of the time for country gentleman. In 2014, a Connecticut-based antique gallery and art appraiser evaluated the oil on canvas painting. He noted the piece had been professionally lined and exhibited only the most minor and scattered in-painting restoration. Painting boasts a heavy vintage wood frame in the 18th Century style, having scattered chips on edges, easily touched up. Canvas measures 30 x 20" and framed to 38 ¼ x 33¼". Original condition report/appraisal conveys with the sale, and the value placed recently was $9000. This portrait is magnificent and would prove a worthy addition to any traditional decor, boasting beautiful details worthy of closer inspection. Please contact us for additional photos. Outside shipping or local pickup to which we can recommend a fine packing and shipping company at very fair rates. Estimated Value $2,400 - UP
