Xavier Cugat. You Bet Your Ass. (1900-1990) Born near Barcelona, Spain, but moved as a child to Cuba by his parents to escape persecution, Cugat was a child prodigy on the violin by age 12 and performed with the Havana Symphony. At age 16 he toured with opera great Enrico Caruso, who was also a caricaturist; Cugat followed suit. Obviously Cugat became a world renowned orchestra leader, which included performers such as Desi Arnaz, Abbe Lane, Tito Rodriguez, Yma Sumac and Miguelito Valdés. His headlining before and after WWII at The Waldorf Astoria for over 16 years remains unequaled, but he never stopped developing his art and became collected for his caricatures of Hollywood stars and his colorful Latin-infused paintings. In his typical illustrative style, this large acrylic on board is entitled "You Bet Your Ass" and it is a joyous explosion of color and whimsy. In excellent condition 30 x 24" and is framed to 35 x 29. Cugat was a superstar band leader, but his art too has found great appreciation, with many of his works in collections throughout the world. This is definitely one of his best. Estimated Value $300 - UP
