Babe Ruth: 208 First Day of Issue 20¢ Commemorative Stamps on Striking and Diverse Covers, Many Miniature Original Works of Art. On July 6, 1983, the US Postal Service issued one of their most collected stamps featuring an excellent engraving of Babe Ruth at bat. It was issued in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of baseball's All-Star Game, this stamp honored Ruth who played in the first All-Star Game, in 1933. The great majority of the covers have Chicago, Illinois postmarks, the city where the stamp was officially issued.
But this collection impresses with the diversity of cachets, illustrations either printed, "silk" portraits or best, hand painted tributes. Over 40 covers are the very appealing silk cachets (very few duplicates) with Babe Ruth at bat, standing, full swing, signing autographs to kids, one even shooting pool. There are 140 printed covers with superb photos of Ruth, Yankee Stadium, a great number playing ball, news headlines and the like with several examples closer to engravings; the quality exceptional. The best by far are the 27 hand painted cachets, most extremely accomplished and appealing. Covers painted by well known illustrators such as Skat, Slyter, Klaus and Karen are nicely represented here all honoring Ruth with their artistry. Outstanding collection.
Do check out the Lou Gehrig commemorative collection also in auction. Estimated Value $400 - UP
