Baseball Notables: J.L. Pepper Martin (St. Louis Cardinals) Judge Landis (First Commissioner of Baseball) DeWolf Hopper (Casey at the Bat). Three notables of baseball, scarce autographs: 1.)Pepper Martin (1904-1965) enjoyed a full career with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1930s and early 1940s. He was best known for his heroics during the 1931 World Series, in which he was the catalyst in a Cardinals' upset victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Signed, hand painted cover by the autograph collector himself whose collection can be found throughout this auction. Postmarked Oct 17, 1931. 2.) Kenesaw Mountain "Judge" Landis (1866-1944) Signed hand illustrated cover as the "Czar of Baseball" Landis was the first Commissioner of Baseball (1920-1944) during which the notorious Black Sox Scandal was discovered, the expulsion of 8 players (Eight Men Out) and the subsequent trial. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1944 Landis has boldly signed the note card. 3.) DeWolf Hopper (1858-1935), actor, singer, producer and nationally well known for his baseball fanaticism is immortalized for his performance of the poem "Casey at the Bat" and was often called upon to give his colorful, melodramatic recitation, which he did about 10,000 times in his booming voice, reciting it during performances and as part of curtain calls. All autographs and covers in near to mint condition. Landis and DeWolf quite scarce. Estimated Value $300 - UP
