Heschel, Abraham Joshua. The Sabbath, Rare Inscribed and Signed First Edition (1951). (1907-1972) Abraham Joshua Heschel was a Polish-born American rabbi and one of the leading Jewish theologians and Jewish philosophers of the 20th Century -- "an intellectual force of major proportions on the American religious scene" according to The NY Times. The Sabbath. Farrar, Straus and Young, Inc., New York, 1951. Dust jacket (rare in any condition) in good condition with some tears held in check with archival tape and chipping along the top edges and spine. Book in solid, very good condition, the paper covered boards clean and bright, no book plates or marks. Heschel has inscribed and signed on loose endpaper "To Mac Benoff, in appreciation of things unsaid, A.J. Heschel." Mac Benoff was a blacklisted writer of the 1950s who created radio's Duffy's Tavern and then went on to great success when Danny Thomas selected him specifically to write "Make Room for Daddy" winning two Emmys.
