Patton, George S., -- ALS, Three Months Prior to Fatal Crash, Regarding a Christmas Present Which He Never Got to Open (1885-1945) U.S. Army general; best remembered for commanding the U.S. Third Army which raced across France and Germany after D-Day, June 6, 1944. Autograph letter signed,"G S Patton Jr.," one page, 9¾x7¼", on letterhead printed, "Headquarters Fifteenth U S Army / A P O," Nov. 1 '45. To Mary Jane Krieger of Harrisburg, Pa. "Thanks for the quotations from Bill Cunningham they are most interesting. I think 'Postwar Picture' is realy [sic] a small poem and very sadly true. Your Christmas Box has come but like a good boy I shall not open it until Dec. 25 '45. With many thanks and all good wishes. Most sincerely G S Patton Jr. P.S. You live up to your friends idea of friendship." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope.
Sadly, Patton died four days before he intended to open his box. He was in an auto accident on Dec. 8 and died on Dec. 21.
Bill Cunningham (1929-2016) was an American fashion photographer who had two columns: "On the Street" and "Evening Hours." Estimated Value $2,000 - UP
