Two Exceptional, 18th Century Ethiopian Psalters with Original Hand-Sewn Leather Cases. Ethiopia is one of the oldest Christian countries, having been converted in the 4th Century by missionaries from Syria. Each 18th century handwritten religious book is written in the Ge'ez language, in black and red ink on vellum pages, approximately 6" x 7½". The script consists of the "Psalms of David" with additional commentary. One consists of approximately 135 folio leaves, the other 171 folio leaves and contains 1-132 "Psalms"; 133-144 "Songs of the Prophets and Prayers of Moses"; 145-151 "Song of Songs of Solomon"; 152-end Praise of Mary". Each book hand sewn into original wood board binding, and most written on both sides. Accompanying each book is its original, beautifully hand-sewn leather carrying case, one with strap.
