Gordon, Charles George -- ALS by "Chinese Gordon"/"Gordon Pasha"/ "Gordon of Khartoum" (1833-85) British Army officer and administrator who fought in the Crimean War and made his reputation in China before entering the service of the Khedive of Egypt and becoming Governor-General of the Sudan. He died in Khartoum attempting to put down a revolt. Autograph letter signed "C.G. Gordon," 1p, on light violet paper with blind embossed British coat of arms at top center, 7x4½' May 16 (or 17), 1870, telling "My dear Liburne" that he will "see that the cost of the earth is 1/11d…& the Hardcore 3/- per yd. It would never do to have put the earth under the stones of Foreshore…" and that he is sending a letter about Coalhouse Glacier. With postscript about not putting earth behind Foreshore to fill in." Small paper loss in blank lower left margin. Estimated Value $450 - UP
