Lot 664

1840. Small letters (reverse of 1839). PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely blue and golden toning on both sides, with deeper blue to aqua at the rims, fading to golden russet to silver frost at the centers. The strike is solid and bold, with crisp details throughout. Gorgeous toning as noted, and this early date is the design conceived by Christian Gobrecht. Notice the stars are somewhat small and delicate, and the reverse lettering too is thin and attractive, giving the fields a very open appearance. Within a few years the letters were made thicker and not quite so elegant. A most attractive example of this sought-after early Gobrecht half dollar. Well struck. Pop 8; 6 finer, 5 in 66, 1 in 66+. (PCGS # 6234) Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500
