Lot 603

1916. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. Well struck and untoned with vibrant original luster on both sides. Popular key date. Only 52,000 struck for this first year of issue, and these slipped into circulation generally unnoticed, hence the tiny numbers that survive in gem or finer grades. This elegant design was created by famed sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil. Liberty is depicted as walking directly toward the viewer, coming through a garden gate with walls surrounding. She holds an olive branch in her right hand, and her shield in her left. Her right breast is exposed as her drapery is extended by her hand holding the olive branch. This artistic revelation was just too much for some members of the public and Congress, who soon demanded that she be fully clothed. In late 1917 the design was changed to keep certain members of the public appeased. Times never change. Pop 85; 35 finer at PCGS for MSFH. (PCGS # 5705) Estimated Value $27,000 - UP
