1794 S-72 R2 Exact Head of 1795 PCGS graded AU50. Frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate. Traces of lighter brown and tan show in some of the protected areas and darker steel brown covers the highpoints. This cent looks perfectly smooth at first glance and the eye appeal is excellent, but there are tiny pits that contain greenish verdigris on both sides, the largest of these touching a leaf above the N in ONE. In addition there are two dull scrapes on the left side of the cap and another lighter one at the bottom of the cap. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state III early, with a die crack through the D in UNITED to the wreath but before the lump on the crack at TY to the hair. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #85172. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is EF45+ sharpness net VF35. As attractive example of the "Exact Head of 1795" variety in spite of the defects. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
