Lot 39

1794 S-53 R6 PCGS Fine Detail Damage. Glossy olive brown and medium chocolate with a half dozen small puffs of slightly darker chocolate brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and free of verdigris, but there are some contact marks including a half dozen rim bruises. Most of the rim bruises are quite minor; the stronger rim marks are over ITE in UNITED and CA in AMERICA. The rim bruises do not affect the legends, only the dentils. Otherwise the only marks are a few trivial ticks, none notable. EDS, Breen state I. Both dies are uncracked, as always on this variety. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Graded F15 sharpness net VG8 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #27860. Bland says F15 net VG10 and tied for CC#8 in the Breen/Bland census. Our grade is F15 sharpness net VG10. This is the discovery coin for the variety, the discovery being made when the M. A. Brown sale was cataloged for the April 1897 auction conducted by the Chapman brothers. An imperfect but very nice cent that comes with a important provenance and "story." The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. PCGS #35621. Estimated Value $6,000 - UP
