Lot 382

1795 S-76a R5 Lettered Edge Poor-1. Glossy medium brown with smooth, uncorroded surfaces. Some of the details would grade G6 but there is a large hole in the center and many rim dents. The date is easily readable, LIBERTY is clear, and maybe a third of the elements on the reverse are clear as well. Only a small portion of the edge letters remains visible thanks to those rim dents. What makes this cent special is that it was struck over an off-center 1794 cent, possibly S-71. The fraction of the 1794 is clearly visible left of the upper part of the cap and LI from LIBERTY shows where UNI would have been located. Walter Breen mentioned in his encyclopedia that there was a report of this variety struck over a spoiled 1794 cent, but he had not seen one. A piece for the serious specialist, not a high-end registry collection. Estimated Value $300 - UP
Discovered by Charles Skiendzielewski, EAC member #17.
