Lot 33

1794 S-47 R4 PCGS graded XF40. Glossy medium brown with a couple splashes of reddish chocolate on the obverse. One of these splashes is on the neck, and within this splash are a half dozen very tiny specks of greenish verdigris (visible only under magnification). Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the notable marks are a small, light rim bruise under the 79 and a slightly stronger one at D in UNITED plus a few other minor marks of no significance. The reverse is very attractive, nearly choice. LDS, Breen state III, with a fine die crack passing through the tops of NITE in addition to the earlier die cracks on the reverse. The repunching on LI in LIBERTY is still clear. In addition, there is a clear double profile (from die bounce) on the forehead, nose tip, lips, and chin. Graded VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #20509. Bland says VF30 and tied for CC#2. Our grade is VF20+. Both sides of this cent are plated on page 107 in the 2005 Provenance Gallery of the Year 1794 prepared by Jon Alan (Al) Boka to illustrate the die variety. And it comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 45, 2 in 50. PCGS #35606. Estimated Value $12,000 - UP
