Lot 328

1773 Virginia Halfpenny Breen-180 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown. Variety with a period (stop) following GEORGIVS. Frosty mint red mellowing to steel brown with about two-thirds of the planchet retaining the mint color. The only notable mark is a shallow scuff at the rim left of the 17. An impressive example of this early copper struck exclusively for use in the American Colonies. Most likely a survivor from the Cohen Hoard (a keg of mint state examples) that was acquired by Israel Cohen prior to 1803 and dispersed to collectors over the next 125 years by the Cohen family. PCGS #241. Estimated Value $700 - UP
Ex Douglas F. Bird-Bob Willoughby Collection.

Realized $1,440
